Operating in volcanic ash.
Common European rules split the airspace in three categories. The highest category is Zone 1 - Limited No-fly Zone. This is an area where it is consider dangerous to fly, and where all air traffic is forbidden. The area can be established both within and outside controlled airspace. Outside this area, we can fly in accordance with approved procedures.
Fjord Helikopter / Helikopter Utleie AS has developed and received approval for such procedures.
When planning our missions, we relate to notifications issued by Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) in London, for notifications issued by the Norwegian aviation authorities and forecasts for significant weather conditions. These forecasts are generally updated every six hours.
Although the forecasts in recent days have been good, the volcanic activity in Iceland is increasing.
Therefore, we can at times be affected by the problem, and ask for understanding that it may alter the planned missions.
